AS 1319 provides guidance for safety signs used in workplaces. If you’re setting up or reviewing signage, use this quick checklist to improve compliance and clarity.
What AS 1319 covers
Common categories include: Danger, Warning, Mandatory, Prohibition, Emergency Information, and Fire signs. The goal is consistent communication using standard colours, symbols, and signal words.
Checklist
- Pick the correct sign type. Choose Danger vs Warning, etc., based on the level of risk and urgency.
- Use standard signal words and symbols. Ensure the iconography and wording match the hazard or instruction.
- Ensure legibility at viewing distance. Size text and symbols so they’re readable from where people will first need the information.
- Check contrast and materials. High-contrast colours improve readability. Select indoor/outdoor materials; consider UV exposure, cleaning, and abrasion. Reflective materials may be appropriate in low light.
- Place signs correctly. Mount at consistent heights with clear sight lines; avoid obstructions and visual clutter.
- Be concise and consistent. Use brief, action-oriented text with standard pictograms; avoid mixed terminology for the same hazard.
- Maintain and replace. Inspect periodically and replace faded, damaged, or outdated signs to preserve clarity and compliance.
